The legend has on the sides the columns of the "Non Plus Ultra" (of Hercules) which in Spain is synonymous with civil and criminal jurisdiction. It also preserves the column of justice, a stone column where the most lenient sentences were executed, while the most severe ones had a gallows built next to it for capital punishment. The current construction is the work of the Cantabrian architect Diego Ibáñez Pacheco, the same one who built the cloister of the cathedral in Mondoñedo, reusing the same stones that were part of the old tower and the shields that were part of the medieval construction. After the transfer of the concepcionist nuns within the walls in the 18th century, there is evidence that part of the Pazo was dismantled to build the current convent. There are remnants of this demolition in the Pazo. Among the owners who owned this building was also the wife of Judge Ramón Pedrosa Andrade, who executed Mariana Pineda in Granada (the first woman to die by garrote for supporting the liberal party).
