History: The history of Château de Belcastel dates back to the 8th century, with its medieval chapel. Over the following three centuries, the Aveyronnais castle became a powerful fortress. In the 13th century, the lords of Belcastel were ruined during the crusades. As a direct consequence, the castle was confiscated by the Crown and used as a military stronghold. In 1390, it became the property of a loyal knight named Saunhac. Generations of his family lived in the castle, bringing prosperity to the village below, and building the historic bridge and church. By the end of the 16th century, the last Saunhac heir abandoned the castle, leaving it to fall into ruins.

In 1973, renowned French architect Fernand Pouillon discovered the ruins of Château de Belcastel. Captivated by the site, he decided to restore it and make it his home. For over eight years, with masons and glaziers living on the property, Pouillon rebuilt and restored this historic monument, using only medieval construction techniques, without machinery, to restore the castle to its original glory. Two decades after Fernand Pouillon's death, the castle was acquired by two New York art dealers. They gave new life to the stones, creating exhibition spaces and opening the castle to the public. Since 2005, over 20,000 visitors are welcomed each year to discover the rich history, extraordinary architecture, and breathtaking views of the property.

The castle: consisting of a dozen rooms and three courtyards with incomparable views of the Aveyron River and the village below.
